It made me very free. And we had no neighbours our own age so my sister, Catherine, and I had to create our entire world in order to entertain ourselves.
I got married at 24 [to Michael Cooper]. When I think about it now, it makes my stomach hurt how young that is. It was a reflex.
What have I just done? I certainly can get fired up by people, and very excited about love and passion, but the chaos that governed my earlier years has thankfully settled down.
People always ask if it was love at first sight when I met Rayya [Elias]. No, it was a slow burn. She was my hairdresser when I met her, 18 years before she died.
It took a long time for our love to grow into what it became. The shattering news that she had six months to live sped things up. Until that point, our love had grown at the speed of evolution, the way that waves shape rock. From that moment, it moved at the speed of an asteroid.
Walking Rayya to the edge of the river, as she called it, is one of the things I came to do in this lifetime. Our love survived the horror of what she was going through. It makes the post-Rayya world liveable for me. After Rayya diedI was in a brief relationship with her friend Simon [MacArthur], but it was very short-lived.
A lot of what I spent years trying to get from men, I actually needed to be getting from women. These deep, long, beautiful relationships are what sustain me. I have great love. Some of it comes from other people, but a lot of it comes from within. The most important relationship in my life is with myself.
